We still have a couple months of heat left this year before winter takes hold, and that means that you’ll likely be making use of your HVAC system pretty regularly.
However, long hours of use can take their toll, so it’s important to maintain your HVAC unit regularly to ensure that it’s performing at maximum capacity and efficiency.
These are some handy tips and tricks we recommend for maintaining your HVAC system.
Change the Filters
The filters in your HVAC system trap airborne allergens and dust in your home. As they clean the air, however, they collect particles that reduce the function and efficiency of your unit. It’s important to inspect and change your HVAC filters regularly (we recommend every few months). At Xtreme Temp Heating and Cooling, we have a selection of quality filters for your system if you want to replace it yourself.
Clean the Coils and Fins
Have you checked the coils and fins of your unit recently? If you haven’t, chances are they’ve accumulated a layer of dust and grime. Coils and fins help circulate the hot and cold air, so it’s important to make sure there’s nothing obstructing them. If you can, clean out any debris (dirt, dust, plant clippings, etc) by brushing it away from with a soft brush or cloth. Some debris may require a hose or spray bottle; turn off the unit before cleaning, especially when applying water.
Check for Performance Issues
Make sure to check regularly whether your HVAC system is functioning correctly. If you’re noticing your unit isn’t performing as well as it should, there could be a blockage or other issue with the system. Check for leaks, which can result from damaged pumps or tubes. Weak airflow can indicate a clog, likely in the filter. For any issue that can’t be solved with a filter replacement or cleaning, be sure to call in a professional to fix it properly.
